Recipes from a Neighborhood Company

Old Neighborhood is a small, neighborhood company, led by the third and fourth generation of the founding Demakes family and staffed by neighbors and friends. We stock a hefty list of Old Neighborhood meats, like Sausage, Corned Beef, Pastrami, and Marinated Steak Tips. Try these recipes using their products:

French Dip Sandwich

Use Old Neighborhood Foods Roast Beef from the deli section to make tasty French Dip sandwiches, served with a side of au jus dipping sauce.

Ingredients:

  • Old Neighborhood Foods Roast Beef
  • baguettes or sub rolls
  • Au Jus:
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tbsp. all purpose flour
  • 2 cans beef consumme
  • 1 shallot, chopped

Instructions:

  • Prepare Au Jus*:
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over moderate heat.
  • Add chopped shallots and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add flour to skillet and cook for 1 minute.
  • Whisk in consumme in a slow stream.
  • Bring sauce to boil. Lower the heat and all to simmer until ready to serve.

Assemble Sandwiches:

Dip the roast beef into the au jus sauce and pile into the sub rolls.
Serve with a ramekin or small bowl of extra au jus for dipping.

Carne Asada

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 pounds of Old Neighborhood Foods Shaved Steak
  • Olive oil
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Marinade:

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 jalapeño chile pepper, seeded and minced
  • 1 Pepper
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 large handful fresh cilantro, leaves and stems, finely chopped (great flavor in the stems)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 limes, juiced
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil

Instructions:

  • Lay the steak in a large non-reactive bowl or baking dish. Combine marinade ingredients and pour the marinade over the steak. Make sure each piece is well coated. Cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-4 hours.
  • Preheat your grill over medium-high flame (you can also use a cast iron grill pan on high heat for stove-top cooking). Season both sides of the steak pieces with salt and pepper. Grill steak through until medium rare to well done.
  • (Optional) Serve with warm tortillas (flour or corn). Warm the tortillas for 30 seconds on each side in a dry skillet or on the grill, until toasty and pliable. Alternatively, you can warm tortillas in a microwave: heating just one or two at a time, place tortillas on a paper towel and microwave them for 15 to 20 seconds each on high.
  • (Optional) Serve with pico de gallo (fresh tomato salsa) and chopped avocados.

Kielbasa and Clams Linguine

Enjoy the nice smokey flavor of Old Neighborhood Kielbasa to accent native New England clams on your favorite pasta.

Ingredients:

  • 2 links (6 oz) Old Neighborhood Kielbasa
  • 1 lb cooked Linguine
  • 1/4 cup dices onions
  • 1 teaspoon fresh chopped Garlic
  • 1 (8 oz ) can cooked clams with broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

  • Finely chop Kielbasa and place in large skillet over medium high heat.
  • Cook for 4-5 minutes until kielbasa begins to brown add in onions, garlic, clams and olive oil and cook for an additional 5 minutes until onions are translucent and garlic is fragrant.
  • Add in cooked Linguine, toss and serve in a bowl with crusty Italian bread.

Italian Sausage Hors d’oeuvres

Ingredients:

  • One package Old Neighborhood Italian Sausage or Old Neighborhood Sweet Sausage
  • Frozen puff pastry dough

Instructions:

  • Thaw dough and cut into 3/4″ strips.
  • Spiral-wrap dough around entire length of sausage.
  • Bake at 350ºF for 40 minutes or until pastry is brown.
  • Serve on a round platter garnished with raw pepper rings (Example: red and green peppers for Christmas; orange and yellow for fall.)

Black & Blue Sandwich

Make a black and blue sandwich with Old Neighborhood Foods pastrami. Use our black pastrami with a variety of condiments, all served on pumpernickel bread.

Ingredients:

  • Old Neighborhood Black Pastrami
  • Blue cheese (dressing or crumbles)
  • Swiss cheese
  • Coarse ground mustard (Guilden’s)
  • Dark pumpernickel bread

Instructions:

  • Arrange ingredients on pumpernickel.
  • Grill or serve cold.
